Venus Retrograde: Nothing to be afraid of!
A question many people ask me is what does it mean when a planet goes retrograde in astrology? Does the planet literally go backwards? Uh no, it doesn’t. That would defy all the laws of astrophysics and if that did happen you wouldn’t be reading this article as something had gone seriously wrong in our solar system and we just experienced some cataclysmic catastrophe!
What a retrograde means is that from the earth’s perspective (astrology is based on the planetary movements from the earth’s perspective) the planet appears to go backwards. This astronomy link has an excellent animated graphic what this looks like.
Well what does this mean from an astrologers perspective? How does this influence people here on earth? Different planets going retrograde affect people differently and where the retrograde occurs is important to know too. The retrograde we’re highlighting is Venus in Gemini. See the chart below to see when it is occuring…
Venus Retrograde 2012
Venus retrograde occurs every 18 months and lasts for 40-45 days. We will be affected by the retrograde from the 15th of May through the 27th of June for 2012. It is during this period the planet will appear to be going in reverse. In a retrograde there is a going backwards or reviewing of a certain area of our lives. In this particular case we are looking at Venus. The planet Venus rules our relationships and values. We reassess who we are and what do we stand for. Free Beer? We also also are looking at lessons have we learned from our past relationships, what are we seeking in for our current relationship or what is that we want in a future potential mate? Emotionally stable is always considered a plus! If you are currently in relationship you are looking at what needs to change in yourself or in your partner in order to evolve and grow. If that doesn’t seem to be a possibility and your relationship has been challenging, there is a good chance it will come to an end. Venus retrograde is thought by astrologers as not the ideal time to get married or start a new relationship so whoa there cowboy. Hold off until you’re sure this is what you want right?
Venus rules beauty and aesthetics as well. Avoid getting that Hollywood makeover or putting your bedroom into a pink leopard theme (Unless that really has always been your thing). Also Venus rules money matters, and it’s not an ideal time to sign the dotted line on business agreements.
The retrograde takes place in Gemini. This is the sign of communication. You may find it hard to express yourself to the people close to you in your life. Intimacy becomes a real challenge. When you do try to communicate it can off as backbiting, passive aggressive, changing your mind on whim, and not sticking with your decisions. In other words not a lot of fun to be around, but you’ll be in good company as others are affected by the retrograde they’ll be in the same boat.
Another interesting thing that happens in a Venus retrograde is that old lovers and friends reappear in your life. It may seem fatalistic. Don’t worry, it’s just a friendly (or not so friendly) reminder from the universe that if we didn’t learn our relationship lessons the first time around, we get a second opportunity! Twice the fun!
If your sun sign is in Taurus or Libra take note, you will be feeling the affects a little more than most folks as Venus is your ruling planet. It will definitely be an interesting period for the Bull and the Scales.
The Venus retrograde for 2012 also affects us all in a specific way depending on what our rising sign (Ascendant) is. Do you have your natal charts in hand? Don’t have one? Here is an excellent resource to get a free chart. The key thing to remember during a retrograde is that this is an excellent time to plan and review the areas of your life that are being affected. Just don’t take action in those areas until the retrograde period has passed where you can act on what you learned in the retrograde cycle See? Retrogrades aren’t scary. Ok here we go…
Ascendant in Aries
The Venus retrograde is occurring over your 3rd house, the house of communication. You may find communication a little extra difficult over this time period and also be having a hard time interpreting communication from other people. It may feel like everyone is babbling around you and the feeling is mutual as they aren’t getting what you’re trying to convey either. Your 2nd house (income) and 7th house (Partnership) are ruled by Venus and you may find yourself reviewing those areas of your life.
Ascendant in Taurus
The retrograde occurs on your 2nd house. Values and money are the key words here. Pay close attention to how you are achieving your income and what kind of a budget you have. Make the most of this period and review how you can make your money and resources can work more effectively for you. You may find that money seems to slip through your fingers in this period. It will well advised not make that drunken 3am foray on Ebay or purchasing that Star Trek:TNG commerative plate set that you may have been eyeing. Also Venus rules your 6th house (health and work). You may be feeling the urge to really connect with your co-workers, but you might run into some resistance. (Probably when they find out you own a Star Trek:TNG commerative plate set. Unless you convince them you’re a hipster and you bought it for ironic purposes.)
Ascendant in Gemini
This retrograde occurs in your ascendant house (1st), the house of self. The image of yourself that you project to others will be affected. People will find it difficult to interpret what you’re doing or saying and how you represent yourself will be misconstrued. People close to you won’t “get” you. This is a challenging retrograde as Venus rules your 5th house (romance) and you may be trying to Don Juan but you might come off more as Don Knotts. Your partner may be a little cool to you, but that will change when Venus goes direct.
Ascendant in Cancer
Venus retrograde occurs over the 12th house (Karmic, The Unseen). Yes this is a little heavier area than the other folks on this list. For you people from the past will show up in your life or in your mind and it will be dealing with karmic issues. Karma is those deeper soul challenges and rewards that occur in our life to keep ourselves on our soul plan. (Yes even if you don’t plan anything, you do have a soul plan.) Our soul plan is what we promised we would undertake in this lifetime and what we hope to gain and learn from the experience. You also will find that friends and family (Venus ruled 11th and 4th house respectively) may be a little more on the cool and distant side.
Ascendant in Leo
The retrograde occurs in the 11th house (Groups and Friendships) If you’re a part of some organization they may not be able to interpret how best fit in their social structure and you might be feeling a little cut off. In combination with your 10th house (Career) being ruled by Venus, it would be wise to exercise caution within your vocation. You might want to tell a few people (maybe the boss) where to stick it, but just hold off on that champ.
Ascendant in Virgo
The Venus retrograde is right over your 10th house (Career, Public Vocation). You might not be the corporate raider you normally are with your co-workers and business partners. The golf outings and happy hours schmoozing may not be effective in getting the results you’re looking for. Maintain the course through this period and try not to make any career-ending maneuvers. Your CEO impressions are not likely to be a big hit at the company barbecue. Venus rules the your 2nd and 9th houses, (Money and Adventure) so be careful of reckless spending on said adventures. Blowing your savings to travel to Darwin, MN to see the world’s largest ball of twine is NOT an adventure. Review your finances and plan for what you really want to explore.
Ascendant in Libra
The Venus retrograde is over your 9th house (Adventure, Spirituality, Philosophy). You might try to force your belief system on to someone else and have a hard time understanding theirs. No need for a holy war, take advantage of this time to really reflect on what are the visions you have for your life and the ways you can explore to make those visions into reality. Venus rules your 1st house (Self Expression) and you might be finding yourself wanting to hide away from the world and your partner might be concerned. People will be popping back into your life from the past if you have unfinished business. Venus rules your 8th house (Intimacy) and you’re finding it hard to get close to people. Might as well not get out of bed right? Wrong! Again review what the person you’d want to present to others, and how you can become closer to your partner and friends.
Ascendant in Scorpio
The Venus retrograde is over your 8th house (Intimacy, Transformation, Hidden Resources). Try to stay out of conflicts about sex and other forms of intimacy. This also a time to review your budgets and joint finances. Where is the money going? Have a discussion, not an argument about it with your partner! Speaking of your partner, Venus rules your 7th house (Partnerships) so you may feel like you are walking on eggshells with him/her. If your relationship is healthy, much good can come out this retrograde as issues come to the surface and can be dealt. If you are on shaky ground, it may be best to end it and take the lessons you learned. Venus also rules your 12th house (karma). Past karma may be presenting itself back into your life. Do you have some unfinished business or things you need to learn from your past actions? Did you really bury that body properly so no one could find it?
Ascendant in Sagittarius
The Venus retrograde is over your 7th house (Partnership). Oh no! Relax! Like the article title says just remember not to panic. You may find yourself arguing with your partner over which way the toilet paper roll should go or whether to paint the guest bedroom sienna orange or sunburst yellow (remember earlier in the article, don’t redecorate just yet!). If your relationship is a healthy one, you may find a few wires getting crossed but your relationship will be better off in the long run especially after Venus goes direct. If your relationship is not a healthy one the issues will become forefront and you need to decide if it’s worth working on or kicking to the curb. Venus also rules your friendship and work environment. That could lead to a lot of misunderstandings between your co-workers and your mates. Best advice work hard and play hard but try to get along and play nice.
Ascendant in Capricorn
This occurs in your 6th house (Work environment). Your workmates that drive you crazy will do even more so. You’ll want to really connect with everyone, be part of the popular lunch crew, chat up the cute gal over in marketing and be the grandmaster entertainer at Friday’s happy hour with the guys in sales, but you may find yourself falling flat and leaving them cold. Time to reassess who in the office is truly an ally and who to give a wide berth to. Be extra cautious in the work area as this retrograde affects your Venus ruled career house. Venus also rules your romance house so maybe you want to steer clear of the gal in the marketing there Romeo until Venus goes direct at the end of June.
Ascendant in Aquarius
This occurs in the 5th house (Romance, Children) . This will make you very prone to misunderstandings with the people you are dating and your kids will get on your nerves. (If they don’t already.) Your dating partner may want some space as you may try to pull them too close and it’s probably all for the best, stay cool at let is happen. Old lovers may show up in your life so be aware. (Hopefully not on your doorstep at 2am with a bottle of Jim Beam in one hand and a tear stained love note in the other.) Your children don’t need to be smothered and coddled, let them find their path. Venus rules your family house and they may feel a little distant, and it rules your adventure house so you may feel less than satisfied with your explorations.
Ascendant in Pisces
The Venus retrograde falls on your 4th house (Family). It could make for some very entertaining family reunions. Age old resentments become aired publically and your Mother runs off in tears after telling you she never liked that little tramp you married and you get into a fistfight with your brother over the time you slept with his then girlfriend in high school 20 years ago. You feel driven to get closer to your family and yet you feel pushed away, Age old issues come up and your best bet at this time is to stay out of the conflict zone and spend some quality time dealing with these issues after Venus goes direct. Venus rules your houses of intimacy and communication. Consequently you find yourself short on small-talk and at the same time not feeling like you want to connect in a deeper level, Get in touch with what you really want and you’ll be in great shape in July.
